Never Too Old

Technology. For some this word spurs thoughts of “what’s next” and “no limit”. But for others this word can bring on a cold sweat. There is no denying that technology has played a vital role in making the world seem smaller. It has allowed people to visit by way of the internet, far away places and be exposed to different cultures around the world. You have information on anything at your fingertips and the comfort of completing your “to do list” from your couch. Computers have become such a way of life. From filing your taxes to finding a perfect recipe, computers make life so much easier. But for many adults technology has just become another crowbar in widening the socio-economic gap that people living in poverty face.

Most people born prior to 1970 that have not had the opportunity to learn technology through their employment, are now a part of our society that has been left behind by their lack of computer and technology skills. Even before COVID 19 protocols, almost all services including applying for a job or registering for aid had to be completed through an online application. A large population of people living in West Montgomery have another roadblock in trying to move forward in their walk out of poverty. At Mercy House we are very aware of the challenges our neighbors face in not knowing how to use a computer or access sites on the internet. This does not even take into consideration the cost that comes with owning a personal computer and providing internet access.

This is the main reason that the Pathway House Business Center was set up. People can come by and we can sit with them and enter their information or guide them in completing online applications. They were thankful for the help we could provide but God reminded us that we must do  more. Psalm 71:9 came to mind  “And now, in my old age, don’t set me aside. Don’t abandon me when my strength is failing.” After many months of literally being the hands of Jesus on the keyboard for so many, we decided that we would offer weekly Adult Computer Literacy Classes. We have been so blessed by the adults we serve and their excitement about learning to become self-sufficient on the computer. The adults in this first session of classes are learning about the keyboard, how to set up an email account, search the internet, and so much more. And honestly, they are overjoyed with what they are learning. It is a powerful feeling when you know someone sees your worth, that they want to invest in you, and that they believe in you and your abilities. I see their confidence building in more than just technology. They are building confidence in the idea that there is still work for them to do. And when we are awakened to the truth that God still has a plan for each of us to give him glory, no matter our age, we begin to walk in His power and purpose. Mercy House is welcoming adults into a new season of their lives where they are again called worthy and they are regaining some independence. We see what you are doing God, thank you for letting us be a part.

God Bless,

Pastor Austin
