Walk with West Montgomery on a Pathway Out of Poverty Today
One of our neighbors, I’ll call her Ms. Jane, has been a neighbor-in-need of ours for a little while now. When she first came to us, she needed our food services because she was unemployed and had been for quite some time. Wanting to work, striving to improve her circumstances, she kept coming back with a hope that a difference would be made in her life with the tools we have available at Mercy House and New Walk. We got into step next to her to walk alongside her on this path out of poverty.
She used our Business Center to update and copy her resume, she used our computers to search for a job. She took to our clothing closet to find clothing for a job interview. She’s not unemployed because she’s unskilled, she’s unemployed because she’s facing the barriers to economic stability that plague many living in poverty. But we stand in the gap and we work to eliminate those barriers one by one until the path out of poverty is clear of any obstructions. I learned this week from my Care Coordination team that Ms. Jane is employed. She has a job! Not only does she have a job, but she has a livable wage job, one that will allow her to rise out of poverty with each paycheck. This is a day to rejoice! She’s now looking for stable housing and she’s taking the next step on the path.
Ms. Jane isn’t the only one we’re walking alongside out of poverty and toward stability and security. You can walk with us. You can walk with children to a brighter future. You can walk with families to a home restored. You can walk with the community to a hope revitalized.
